Dr Sophie Cowie

Dr Sophie Cowie is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Exeter, specialising in employer-engaged education and digital innovation. Her career spans academia, industry and public service, with a focus on translating complex technical and regulatory requirements into effective learning experiences.

Sophie began her academic career in atmospheric science, completing a PhD at the University of Leeds and publishing research on dust and climate processes in Northern Africa. She then moved into industry as a Data Scientist, developing expertise in applied analytics and stakeholder-focused project delivery. This combination of academic and industry experience continues to shape her approach to teaching and programme design.

She returned to academia in 2017 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Exeter, where her work expanded into data science and social sensing, including research using social media data to understand health-related phenomena such as hayfever. Returning to the University in 2020 as an Academic Mentor, she has played a key role in the development and delivery of Level 6 and 7 Degree Apprenticeship programmes in Computer Science.

Sophie’s current work focuses on leading employer-engaged education at Levels 6 and 7. She collaborates with a range of internal stakeholders to design programmes that align academic standards with industry needs. She has led major curriculum and assessment redesign in response to evolving apprenticeship standards and enjoys working in this area.

Alongside her academic work, Sophie holds an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and previously worked in the NHS as a GP surgery counsellor. This experience informs her student-centred approach, underpinning her interest in reflective practice as a learning tool for students and the importance of active listening to student feedback and wellbeing needs. 

She also contributes to the University’s Executive Education portfolio as Digital Transformation Lead, designing and delivering Digital and AI programmes for external organisations. Sophie is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a recipient of the CEMPS Academic Recognition Award for Positive Impact.
