Wang Miao is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the Computer Science Department of the University of Exeter, UK. Previously, he was a Lecturer at the Computer Science Department of the University of Plymouth, UK. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Exeter in 2017, and M.Eng. and B.Eng degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from Xidian University, Xian, China, in 2009 and 2012, respectively.

 

His research mainly lies in the areas of 5GB/6G Communications, Unmanned Aerial Networks, Distributed and Networked AI/ML and Digital Twin. He has published over 60 research papers in a series of top journals in computer science, such as IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, etc, and prestigious conferences, such as IEEE InfoComm, ICC, WCNC, GlobleCom, etc. His research was funded by Horizon Europe, FP7, EPSRC and BT.

 

He received two IEEE Best Paper Awards and was invited to give keynote speeches in the international workshops of IWCNT-2018 and NGDN-2020. He serves as the Editorial Board Member of Mathematics, Electronics and Scientific Reports at Nature Portfolio, the Technical Programme Chair to co-organise the international conferences of Smartcity-2025, CSE-2023, CIT-2021 and IUCC-2020, and the Program Committee Member of multiple international conferences, including ScalCom-2021, BDCloud-2020, ScalCom-2020, etc. He was the knowledge-sharing manager for the EU FP7 QUICK and HORIZON-2020 INITIATE projects. He is a Fellow of HEA (Higher Education Academy), UK.

 

Dr. Miao is seeking highly motivated PhD students (scholarship/self-funded) to join his research group. The following PhD scholarship opportunities are currently available: 

 

  1. Dr. Miao's project titled "Distributed and Lightweight Large-Language-Models for Aerial 6G Spectrum Management" has been shortlisted in the 2025 EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award. One full EPSRC scholarship is now available for this project, with the application deadline of 5th January 2026.
  2. Dr. will nominate two candidates for the CSC-Exeter Joint PhD Scholarship: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/funding/award/?id=5727. The application deadline is 1st December 2025.
  3. One UK PhD scholarship funded by the Computer Science Department is available for research on AI-driven 5GB/6G network resource optimisation.
