Research interests are broadly in machine learning, statistical pattern recognition, multi-objective optimisation and the links between them.   Richard has wide experience in 

 

Richard is seconded to the Alan Turing Institute as the academic principal investigator for Project Bluebird, a Prosperity Partnership between the NATS, the Alan Turing Institute and the University of Exeter exploring the feasibility of using AI for air traffic control with digital twins and machine learning.

 

Richard is working on "SAMueL-3: Improving acute patient outcomes using Stroke Audit Machine Learning and clinical pathway simulation with causal inference" using digital twins and machine learning aiming to reduce life-altering differences in emergency stroke care by identifying and addressing variations between hospitals in the use of proven clot-removing treatments. Richard is the module convenor for ECM2433 The C Family, available to study for students studying Computer Science programmes.

 

Richard was the founding director of the University of Exeter Institute for Data Science and AI, and is a former head of the department of Computer Science.
