My research focusses on problems which combine spatial, social and environmental dimensions. I specialise in both creating and applying data science methods. Rather than expensive and opaque prediction models, I aim to create fast, robust and intuitive methods to analyse big (and small) data. In my applied research I use these and other methods and work with domain experts to help solve their problems. For example, I (currently or historically) work with the Met Office to collect and summarise Tweets about weather; with IBM on data visualisation for job searchers; with the Devon Wildlife Trust on undersea ecosystems and with WikiMedia UK on climate change communication.
