Computer Science

Professor Lu Liu is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Exeter. He is an internationally recognised expert in Artificial Intelligence, with a focus on developing trustworthy and sustainable AI algorithms and systems for healthcare and net zero applications. He leads the Trustworthy and Green AI (TruGreenAI) Lab, which develops trustworthy, green, and efficient AI solutions for real-world impact. His current research includes several projects on self-learning digital twin models for healthcare and sustainability, capable of learning from real-world data, generating new data, and iteratively evolving over time.

Professor Liu has more than 300 scientific publications in prestigious journals and leading international conferences (including NeurIPS, AAAI, ICCV, ICLR, ACM MM, and MICCAI). He has secured over 30 grants as PI/Co-I, totalling more than £20 million, which are supported by EPSRC, MRC, the EU, Innovate UK, the Royal Society, the British Council, and industry partners (e.g., BT, Rolls-Royce, and CGI), including SLAIDER: Self-Learning AI-Based Digital Twins for Accelerating Clinical Care in Respiratory Emergency Admissions (EP/Y018281/1), AI4NetZero: Self-Learning Digital Twins for Sustainable Land Management (EP/Y00597X/1), and SLAIDER-QA: Advanced AI-Based Digital Twins for Emergency Respiratory Care (MR/Y006609/1).

He also serves as Strategic Lead for Data Science Foundations at the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI), Co-Lead of the Computation, Environment and Society research theme, and Deputy Director of Global Engagement in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Exeter. He has been included in Stanford University's list of the World's Top 2% Scientists since 2023. He is the recipient of eight Best Paper Awards from international conferences and has delivered nine invited keynote speeches at international events.

He currently serves as an Associate Editor for Big Data Mining and Analytics (BDMA) and Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications (PPNA). He has chaired more than 20 international conferences, including as General Chair for IEEE DSS 2025, IEEE EUC 2023, IEEE/ACM UCC 2021, IEEE/ACM BDCAT 2021, IEEE SustainCom 2020, and Cyberlife 2019, and as Program Chair for IEEE Digital Twin 2024, IEEE CIT 2024, IEEE ITIA 2022, and IEEE IUCC 2021.

Professor Lu Liu provides professional supervision for PhD students, supporting and guiding them to make outstanding achievements and received the Staff Excellence Award for Excellence in Doctoral Supervision in 2018.
