My research establishes rigorous mathematical frameworks that unify the design of evolutionary and quantum optimisation algorithms, bridging fundamental theory with practical applications. I developed the geometric theory of evolutionary algorithms, now adopted internationally including by the European ROARnet COST Action as a foundation for their open-source library, and invented Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP), which has achieved widespread adoption with implementations in DEAP and applications across diverse domains. Since 2018, my quantum optimisation research has generated over £500,000 in industry partnerships, producing two patents and software tools adopted by Fujitsu, with current projects including Jupiter Investment Management and the British Council UK-Israel collaboration with D-Wave Systems. I founded and lead QuantOpt, the premier quantum optimisation workshop at GECCO, and will serve as General and Local Chair for EvoStar 2027/2028 at Exeter. With 100+ publications (2,300+ citations, h-index 26), I serve as Associate Editor for Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines, on the EuroGP Steering Committee, and have edited 11 books and special issues. I lead an active research group with 4 current PhD students and 6 completions, including recent Best Student Paper Awards at GECCO 2024 and 2025.
